Social Enterprise

We believe pursuing the common good and business success go hand-in-hand. The results are greater glory to God and more opportunity for underestimated people.

Why Social Enterprise?

Social enterprises are business ventures that align with our nonprofit mission while generating employment, opportunity and personal growth for people and communities.

The primary purpose of Common Threads, our first social enterprise, is to lead in Cleveland's thrift store market by offering an excellent shopping experience, best-in-class employment and environmental stewardship. Clearly, the public agrees, voting Common Threads as 'Best Thrift Store' in Cleveland three times (2017, 2019 and 2020) since its opening in 2016!

Peripeti Home, which we acquired in 2022, brings to market high-quality candles and unique scents, showcasing the talent of female entrepreneurs and providing supportive employment for refugee women. Peripeti was named in 2021 by Sustainable Citizen as a top producer of high-quality, environmentally-sustainable candles.

Where do we operate social enterprises?

Common Threads Thrift operates in two locations. The Fairview Park location opened in June 2016 and the Brook Park location opened in December of 2020.

Our Approach:

Social enterprises seek a triple bottom line of “people, planet and profit.”

Our businesses rise or fall on our people - those we employ and partner alongside. At Common Threads and Peripeti Home, we seek to hire from within our nonprofit programs or partners, providing a pathway of employment, training, increased vocational and relational skills and personal/spiritual support.

Our businesses measure success, in part, through creation care. Common Threads responsibly recycles unusable donated textiles, keeping 250,000+ pounds out of landfills annually. Peripeti uses only sustainable materials to produce its candles.

Our businesses generate profits that flow back to Building Hope in the City to further its purpose of loving our city and its people well and bringing glory to God.
