Compassion in Action

JOHN GAZZO’S HEART OF SERVICE

At the heart of Building Hope in the City (BHITC) resides a culture of compassion and service, exemplified by individuals like John Gazzo, a true superstar volunteer and valued member of our longstanding church partner, Grace CMA! Born and raised in Cleveland, John’s dedication to his community runs deep, making him a cherished member of the BHITC family.

John’s journey with BHITC began with a stirring in his heart for the well-being of his city. Attending an Urban Poverty training in 2012, John found himself drawn to BHITC’s mission, which resonated profoundly with his values. “The mission statement of BHITC really spoke to me,” John explains. “It called me not only to advance the good of the city, but also to respond to the Great Commission we’re called to in the faith.”

Throughout the year, John generously lends his time to various BHITC programs, with a special commitment to our first social enterprise, Common Threads Thrift. “My favorite part of volunteering at Common Threads is the way the greater mission of BHITC is embedded into everything, and of course, the people,” shares John warmly. “The staff are not just great coworkers, they have quickly become friends.”

From volunteering at the Fairview Park location to becoming an integral part of the Brook Park store since its inception, John has consistently been a pillar of support. “The staff at the Brook Park location are truly amazing,” he attests. “Their warmth and welcoming culture make every volunteering session a great experience.” This sentiment is echoed by Gina Shrader, Common Threads Brook Park Store Manager, who shares, “We’re honored to have John as a volunteer. His compassion to serve others is just one of his many humble qualities. His kind and generous spirit is a testament to his commitment.”

But wait! There’s more! John’s dedication extends far beyond Common Threads. He actively participates in BHITC’s Community Development program, tutoring at The Hoper Center, and various other initiatives, as well. David Van Hal, BHITC Ministry Engagement Manager, reflects on John’s remarkable commitment, stating, “Typically when a volunteer joins BHITC, they find an area of the organization and stick to it, and that’s great! It is rare, however, to have a volunteer like John who volunteers throughout the whole organization by responding to various needs as they arise.”

Motivated by his faith, John sees volunteering as an integral part of the Christian journey. “We all have spiritual gifts,” John shares earnestly. “I genuinely enjoy serving. Whatever I can do to plant a seed and advance the Kingdom, that’s what I want to do. That’s what we’re called to do.” To those considering volunteering, John offers heartfelt encouragement: “Try it! You never know how much you’ll like it until you try. Be aware of the opportunities to serve all around you.”

John exemplifies the spirit of Colossians 3:23-24: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.” BHITC is deeply grateful for John’s exemplary service, which reflects not only his devotion but also mirrors the ultimate example set by Christ Jesus, who came not to be served but to serve (Matthew 20:28).
