Empowered Minds, Transforming Futures
STUDENT SUCCESS WITH BHITC EDUCATION ENRICHMENT
Yomarie Gonzalez, BHITC Education Enrichment Coordinator, serves as the guiding force behind the BHITC Education Enrichment Program in the Stockyards neighborhood, held at the West 58th Street Church of God. Here, dozens of young minds from the Clark-Fulton and Stockyards (CFSY) communities gather each week, receiving educational support beyond their standard schooling.
According to Yomarie, the Education Enrichment program in CFSY goes beyond tutoring; it’s also about fostering a safe space where families find solace and students flourish. “Our mission extends beyond academics,” she explains. “We encompass the holistic growth of our students, nurturing their academic growth and spiritual development alike.”
BHITC’s Education Enrichment programs – at both CFSY and at The Hope Center – are founded on the idea that access to quality education and adult role models are keys to student success. For many students in CFSY, the journey toward academic success is often impeded by overcrowded classrooms. And yet, amidst the challenges and barriers, we witness transformative stories unfold!
Take, for instance, the journey of Lennox Santiago-Martich, who joined our CFSY enrichment program in 2021. Initially grappling with challenges in reading and writing, Lennox’s dedication and perseverance have yielded meaningful progress.
“Lennox was motivated by the pictures that I drew for each letter, and he enjoyed frequenting the alphabet wall to practice his newly learned skills. I feel blessed to have been a part of his learning and am grateful to BHITC for providing me the opportunity to serve and apply my gifts!”

Fast forward to the present, in his fourth-grade year, Lennox now confidently reads and writes at grade level, showcasing a commendable proficiency! His strides reveal the power of support in overcoming educational barriers.
“Parents ensure the success of the Enrichment Program,” explains Yomarie. “They walk alongside us to ensure critical educational expectations are met by bringing their students to the program everytime we meet.” Lennox’s mother, Marilus Matrich, expresses her appreciation for the program, witnessing first-hand Lennox’s growth. “Lennox faced significant challenges during the COVID pandemic, struggling with online classes. As a single parent responsible for both parenting and teaching, this Education Enrichment program has been a tremendous help,” says Marilus. “Since joining, Lennox’s math skills and overall academic performance have improved.”
BHITC believes in providing each student all the resources they need to enter their full potential. “My favorite thing about this program is the feeling of family when you are with this group of people. The staff and volunteers really care about the students, and they are so patient with them,” shares Marilus.
